About Four day trips by train: the back story

You don’t need a car to leave Barcelona for the day. Four of the best day trips start at stations in the city centre, on three railways: FGC, Rodalies and the high-speed lines from Sants.

Montserrat

FGC’s R5 runs from Plaça d’Espanya to the foot of the mountain, where it connects with the cable car and the rack railway, the Cremallera, up to the monastery.

Sitges

Rodalies R2 Sud trains run down the coast to Sitges from Sants and Passeig de Gràcia.

Check the timetable on the operator’s own site on the morning you travel.

Girona

High-speed trains run from Barcelona Sants north to Girona; book on the operators’ own websites.

The Penedès

Rodalies R4 runs to Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the home of cava, where Codorníu and other cellars open to visitors.

Before you go

In October 2026, storms disrupted several Rodalies lines. Check rodalies.gencat.cat on the day you travel.

Our advice: leave early, and for Montserrat, go on a weekday.
